MINDEN, NV

Carex subfusca - rusty slender sedge Carex subfusca, rusty slender sedge, is a loosely bunched tall statured sedge, just over 0.5 m tall at this site, with flowering stems much longer than the basal leaves. The leaves are born from the base of the stems and do not form a basal bunch from ground level. The lanceolate perigynia are larger in size than the subtending bract, average about 3.5-4 mm long, and long slender beaks. This site includes open dry understory of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) at Inspiration Point above Emerald Bay, just southwest of Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, California.

According to Cronquist in IMF vol 6, Carex subfusca is like Carex pachystachya but with paler perigynia and pistillate bracts and perigynia that measure mostly less than 4 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, and nerved ventrally as well as dorsally.
