Visitors to Las Vegas today may be surprised to learn that in the 1930s, Boulder Dam was southern Nevada's top tourist attraction. Visitors from around the world flocked to see the mammoth public works project.

Many of these visitors were also interested in seeing the nearby Grand Canyon. Among the first to recognize the tourist potential of flights over the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and Boulder City was Glover E.&quot;Roxy&quot; Ruckstell.

Ruckstell earned his reputation on the AAA Championship Auto Racing Circuit during the teens, driving against Eddie Rickenbacker, Harris “Pop“ Hanshue and Jack Frye. During World War I, he helped develop the Liberty aircraft engine. After the war, he earned his fortune selling the &quot;Ruckstell Axle&quot; for the Model T Ford. Like Rickenbacker, Hanshue, and Frye, Ruckstell saw a future In aviation, acquiring Grand Canyon Air Lines In 1931.

Ruckstell moved the airline to Boulder City. For fares ranging from $5 to $37.50, visitors received a breathtaking aerial view of Lake Mead, Boulder Dam and the Grand Canyon. Flying Ford Tri-Motors at a leisurely 90 mph, round trips to the Grand Canyon usually took all day.

Ruckstell, finding the business unprofitable, sold the airline to G&amp;G Airlines of Tucson and concentrated his efforts on boat tours and the new Lake Mead Lodge. Grand Canyon Air Lines remained in business under the ownership of G&amp;G until the start of World War II.

Today, the Grand Canyon air tour industry is a burgeoning part of southern Nevada aviation with many airlines offering sightseeing flights to an estimated 750,000 annual passengers.

It was Las Vegas' good fortune In 1925 to lie on a natural air route between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Federal legislation that year spurred the growth of air travel In the United States by creating a national network of air mail routes to be operated by private couriers. Western Air Express, a new Los Angeles-based company bid successfully for the civil air mail route connecting Los Angeles and Las Vegas with the central transcontinental route at Salt Lake City.

On April 17, 1926, pilots in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City pulled on coveralls and goggles, strapped on their revolvers, and climbed Into the open cockpits of two new Douglas M-2 biplanes. Stopping to refuel and pick up mall at dusty Rockwell Field In Las Vegas, they completed their flights In a leisurely eight hours. Flight Instructions were simple: stay to the right of the railroad tracks to avoid colliding with the plane headed In the opposite direction.

Carrying mail made the flights profitable but the law's long range objective was to develop passenger service. WAE adapted the five-foot mall compartment of the M-2 to hold removable chairs for two parachute-toting passengers. Just five weeks after the first airmail flight, the first passengers arrived and Las Vegas became one of the first American cities to have combination passenger and airmail service.

By the end of the decade, WAE reached as far east as Dallas and Kansas City and as far north as Seattle, operating the longest network of any American airline. Sleeker and faster Boeing monoplanes soon replaced the sturdy M-2s for mall service and spacious 12 seat Fokker tri-motors provided more passenger comfort. Despite a forced merger of most of Its routes with Transcontinental Air Transport In 1930, and severely restricted operations during World War II, the renamed Western Airlines emerged as one of the strongest air carriers in the 1950s through 1970s. It merged with Delta Airlines In the 1980s.
