A white-breasted nuthatch joins the fun Pine nuts are their favorite. The last several times I've been up here, I didn't see any chickadees at the top on the ridge. But I always find them down here near the northern base of the ridge. If you hear them you stop walking and look around and if you see a few you reach for the pine nuts and almost the moment the nuts come out the chickadees are mobbing you. The nuthatches are fellow travelers. They watch what the chickadees are up to and might decide to get in on the sweet, sweet pine nut action. However, I have encountered much larger Clark's nuthatches that dance around the tree branches watching the chickadees, but just can't bring themselves to come down to my hand. Eventually they'll go for pine nuts I toss onto the snow. But these smaller guys are much more courageous.

Kiley Ranch Preservancy Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Sparks, Nevada. The foundation is dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural beauty of the Kiley Ranch area, which encompasses over 200 acres of land. The foundation was established in 2005 by concerned citizens who wanted to ensure that the land would not be developed and would be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Relay Peak 10,338 feet high. I have been to the top multiple times, and it is one of my favorite local climbs. In fact, I prefer it to nearby (and slightly taller and more famous) Mt Rose in many ways because far fewer people ever climb it. Maybe because most of the route is along a dirt road rather than a forest trail. But I don't mind that. I was completely alone up on the ridge that morning. This is one of the nicest aspects of living in Nevada compared to California. I don't care what time of year it is, what the weather is, if you go <i>anywhere</i> in Southern California on the weekend you will be accompanied by at least half a dozen people, maybe five times that. In fact, Lake Tahoe is so crowded with people, year round, I never go there.
