The Coming of the Commercial Jet Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport Until the later 1950s, commercial aircraft had propellers. The jet engine, developed before World War Il, required such a large amount of fuel that they were impractical for commercial use. This changed with the development of the De Havilland Comet Jetliner. First flown In 1952, the Comet was the precursor of a new age of commercial transport. Their success led to the development of commercial jets in the United States. In 1954, the Boeing 707, a leap of faith for Boeing which spent $15 million developing it, became the first domestic commercial jet to fly. Douglas, the other major contender in the commercial jet race, was next with its DC-8. It was a DC-8 which first brought commercial jet air travel to Las Vegas, when one flew in as part of the World Congress of Flight in 1959. Convair was the third major contender In the jetliner race, with its 880. Airlines large and small began to use the new commercial jets, and passengers appreciated the greater comfort, speed, and quiet they provided. Other American and foreign aircraft companies tried to compete with their own commercial jet designs, but Douglas and Boeing dominated the market throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The jet transformed commercial air travel. By the 1960s, jets were the standard for all major airlines.
Western Air Express Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport It was Las Vegas' good fortune In 1925 to lie on a natural air route between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Federal legislation that year spurred the growth of air travel In the United States by creating a national network of air mail routes to be operated by private couriers. Western Air Express, a new Los Angeles-based company bid successfully for the civil air mail route connecting Los Angeles and Las Vegas with the central transcontinental route at Salt Lake City. On April 17, 1926, pilots in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City pulled on coveralls and goggles, strapped on their revolvers, and climbed Into the open cockpits of two new Douglas M-2 biplanes. Stopping to refuel and pick up mall at dusty Rockwell Field In Las Vegas, they completed their flights In a leisurely eight hours. Flight Instructions were simple: stay to the right of the railroad tracks to avoid colliding with the plane headed In the opposite direction. Carrying mail made the flights profitable but the law's long range objective was to develop passenger service. WAE adapted the five-foot mall compartment of the M-2 to hold removable chairs for two parachute-toting passengers. Just five weeks after the first airmail flight, the first passengers arrived and Las Vegas became one of the first American cities to have combination passenger and airmail service. By the end of the decade, WAE reached as far east as Dallas and Kansas City and as far north as Seattle, operating the longest network of any American airline. Sleeker and faster Boeing monoplanes soon replaced the sturdy M-2s for mall service and spacious 12 seat Fokker tri-motors provided more passenger comfort. Despite a forced merger of most of Its routes with Transcontinental Air Transport In 1930, and severely restricted operations during World War II, the renamed Western Airlines emerged as one of the strongest air carriers in the 1950s through 1970s. It merged with Delta Airlines In the 1980s.
