The Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln, NE is an educational and research institution dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of Nebraska and the Great Plains region. Established in 1878, the Society is the premier historical repository for the state, with more than 35 million documents, photos, artifacts, and other items in its collections. It is also the oldest state historical society in the United States.

The Society’s building in downtown Lincoln houses several permanent and rotating exhibits, as well as a research library and archives. The library has more than 60,000 volumes, including rare materials and books on Nebraska history. The archives contain records from government agencies, businesses, churches, and other organizations, along with private collections of family papers and photographs.

The Society also sponsors several educational programs, including lectures, workshops, and conferences. It offers a variety of resources to help teachers and students explore Nebraska’s past, including a traveling museum program and a “History to Go” program which sends staff to schools and community centers. The Society also offers an extensive array of traveling exhibits, which have been displayed in museums and libraries around the country.
