The Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1878 to preserve and promote Nebraska’s history. The Society is based in Lincoln, Nebraska and has a statewide mission. It has seven branch offices throughout the state, from Alliance in the Panhandle to Norfolk in the east.

The Society collects, preserves, and makes available for research a wide variety of materials related to Nebraska’s history. Its holdings include manuscripts, photographs, maps, books, newspapers, periodicals, and audio-visual materials. It also houses a library and museum with a variety of artifacts and documents. The Society’s website provides access to numerous resources and research tools.

The NSHS also provides a variety of educational programs, lectures, and tours. It also offers grants, awards, and scholarships to individuals and organizations that promote history and heritage in Nebraska. The Society is involved in many community and public history initiatives, such as the Nebraska Passport program and the Great Plains Trail.

The NSHS is a member of the National History Alliance and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It publishes the Nebraska History magazine and the Nebraska History journal. It also produces the Nebraska Historical Society Bulletin and the Nebraska History Newsletter. The Society is funded in part by grants from the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
