Lolium persicum - Persian darnel A distinctive ryegrass with terminal spikes like those of Lolium multiflorum but each lateral spikelet has a long 2nd glume, which is much longer than the adjacent lemma and often as long as the entire spikelet. The long lateral glumes are technically 2nd glumes because they are adjacent to the second lemma. The lower first lemma is inset against the main rachis of the seed head. Like all ryegrass species, each lateral spikelet lacks a 1st glume.

Often found in and around crop fields and other similarly disturbed settings. This is ryegrass is typically inhabits the understory of crop fields (e.g., with wheat, canola, or sunflower). Given its relatively short stature, and Persian darnel is often not readily detected compared to crop weeds that stand above the crop canopy. Regardless, Persian darnel seed can be harvested with crop seed.

Samples were collected from a spring wheat crop field near Chester, Liberty County, Montana.
