2019 - Road Trip - 110 - Lewiston - 6 - Montana Building The elaborate 1916 built six-story brick and terra cotta structure stands as a visible sign of the stability and prosperity of Lewis town in 1916 and as the "architectural anchor" of the central business district. The Montana Building is a good example of the preferred construction methods and materials of the period. It was designed by J. G. Link and C. S. Haire. Local droughts and the great depression combined to cause a period of difficulty for the building and the County eventually assumed part ownership in lieu of taxes as all the banks in Lewistown were closed by the early part of 1924. The First National Bank formed December 13, 1924, remains in the Montana Building. In 1960, when the Montana Hardware Co. moved to a new location, the bank expanded and now occupies the entire ground floor.
2019 - Road Trip - 109 - Lewiston - 5 - Masonic Temple The Masonic Temple also known as the Lewistown Lodge No. 37 A.F. & A.M., is a building from 1908. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is a standalone three-story building, with basement, at the corner of Fourth Avenue North and West Broadway Street in Lewistown. Up to the ceremonial placement of the building's cornerstone on August 20, 1908, almost all of the stonecutters, masons, and others involved with its construction had come from the nation of Croatia, including Peter Tuss, the stonemason who was the contractor for the building's construction.

2019 - Road Trip - 106 - Lewiston - 2 - Mackey Building The Montana Tavern is the main tenant today of the Historic Main Street districts Mackey Building. The ground floor finish detracts from the fine lines of the structure. Constructed during the 1911 half-million-dollar Lewistown building boom, the $20,000 Mackey Building sits directly over Big Spring Creek. A blend of Romanesque and Classical Revival styles, the structure maintains much of its original façade, including the original Mackey Building sign in the colourful exterior checkerboard masonry work. Mrs. Pearl Bloom accommodated borders in the Mackey Rooming House on the second floor until 1922 when it became the Spokane Hotel. Along with a clean room, guests could enjoy a game of billiards and a cold drink at the Rialto Pool Hall. The Blue Goose Saloon operated here in conjunction with the Rialto until 1916. Prohibition forced the Blue Goose’s closure in 1918. Joseph Alweis ran the Hub Clothing out of 202 ½ West Main from 1914 to 1916, and again from 1918 to 1941. The Montana Tavern opened after Prohibition. Patrons can still view Spring Creek through an opening in the floor.
