MADISON VALLEY HISTORY MUSEUM

ENNIS, MT

Carex paysonis - Payson sedge Growing in the dry meadows of subalpine parkland in Bear Basin, Spanish Peaks, Madison Range, north of Big Sky, Gallatin County (near Madison County line), Montana. In this relatively low elevation subalpine setting, Payson sedge grows in robust fashion to just short of 1 m tall. The dark pistillate bracts and perigynia with generally a submarginal nerve are distinguishing of Payson sedge, even if this is a robust bunch of tall stature. Most of the perigynia during this late season observation each appeared to harbor an aborted achene.
