The Battle of Carthage was a significant event in the early history of Carthage, Missouri. It was fought on July 5, 1861 between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The Union forces, commanded by General Nathaniel Lyon, were attempting to secure the area for the Union and to prevent the Confederate forces from gaining a foothold in the region.

The battle began as an artillery exchange. General Lyon ordered his forces to fire upon the Confederate forces, who had positioned themselves on a hilltop near Carthage. The Union forces were able to drive the Confederates from their position after a prolonged fight.

After the Union victory, General Lyon advanced toward the town of Carthage. The Union troops entered the town and set up a line of defense. The Confederate forces, now led by General Sterling Price, attempted to retake the town, but they were unsuccessful. The Union forces held their position until the Confederate forces withdrew.

The Battle of Carthage was a decisive victory for the Union forces. General Lyon was killed during the battle, but his troops were able to secure the area and prevent the Confederates from gaining a foothold in the region. The Union victory at Carthage helped to keep Missouri in the Union and ensured that the state would remain part of the United States.
