The NAMES Project Metro St. Louis is a grassroots organization located in St. Louis, Missouri, dedicated to preserving the memory of those affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The organization holds an annual quilt display to honor those lost to AIDS, and to raise awareness about the impact of the disease.
The NAMES Project began in 1987, when a San Francisco AIDS activist, Cleve Jones, organized a project to create a quilt to honor those lost to the disease. From that project grew the NAMES Project Foundation, which developed the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
The NAMES Project Metro St. Louis was founded in 1992, and has been responsible for displaying the quilt in St. Louis every year since. The quilt is composed of panels created by family and friends of those lost to AIDS, and contains more than 48,000 individual panels.
The organization holds an annual display of the quilt in the St. Louis area, in order to remember those lost to AIDS, and to raise awareness about the disease. In addition to the annual display of the quilt, the organization also provides support to those living with HIV/AIDS in the St. Louis area, by offering resources and services.
