The Historical Society of the US Courts in the Eighth Circuit is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the federal court system in the United States. The organization is based in St. Louis, Missouri, and serves the eight states that make up the Eighth Circuit: Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The Historical Society was founded in 1989 by a group of judges and lawyers who recognized the need to preserve the rich history of the federal courts in the Eighth Circuit. The organization is run by a volunteer board of directors and has a membership of judges, attorneys, historians, and others interested in the history of the federal court system.
The Historical Society sponsors a variety of programs and activities designed to promote the study and understanding of the federal court system in the Eighth Circuit. These include educational programs for teachers and students, public lectures and seminars, and the publication of scholarly articles and books on the history of the federal courts.
The Historical Society also maintains an archive of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts related to the federal court system in the Eighth Circuit. The archive is housed at the Thomas F. Eagleton US Courthouse in St. Louis and is open to researchers and scholars by appointment.
