Battery Powell, a Union Army battery during the Battle of Corinth. The day after Parks's death, Private Wilcox died here, a mile away. One hundred years after this photograph was taken, my family moved into a house that sits on this site. I was a teenager when we moved.
Behind this wall . . . . . . is a space in another time . . . . . . it was then an open field on the edge of the small village of Corinth, Mississippi. That other today was early morning, October 3, 1862. A Union scouting party was crossing that field, this field, in this space, in this time, when Private Lewis Wilcox of the 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry grabbed the arm of Corporal James "Hop-Frog" Parks of the 16th Iowa Infantry . . . "Parks! There through the trees – General Grant with his entourage!" As Parks lifted his binoculars in the thrill of better seeing the already famed aggressor general, a sniper's round (as Confederate troops were still on the outskirts of the other side of the town, this sniper was thought to be a local rebel sympathizer) shattered Parks's skull, and he fell dead at Wilcox's feet. Wilcox died the next day, when his Company was called to retake the Union Battery Powell from the Confederate troops who had taken the Battery that same morning.
Shouted through a closed door: "Mama, I may need a little help in here." I knew Goose best a mile or two away from, and six years earlier than, Bony's hidden place. In his twenties Goose died from a short life of alcohol and drug use. He moved ponderously through that life. An only child of uncertain yet indubitable parentage – good god, his parents were his weave as much as he theirs – when I knew him at ten his mother appeared to me his guide to the landscape which in crossing he found gentle assurance. A most peculiar perception for fifth grade me, his father I also thought of as his mother. Both were the fair field of his life. They steadied him as they could, as his large, wobbly frame advanced over many battlegrounds. I have thought about the appellation Goose. Maybe because he was born Norman. Maybe because he wobbled. Sweetly tottering forward, his words to the end a child's squeaky singsong. Goose was only one of this one small town's commonplace wounded. I knew him less in his last years, but he seemed then, as he was wont to find it so in those also wounded, puzzlingly happy.
