Founded in 1992, the Institute’s headquarters are located in Jackson, Mississippi and it serves a 13-state region.

The ISJL’s mission is to foster an appreciation of the diversity and vibrancy of Southern Jewish life, with a particular focus on its historic roots, and to ensure that this heritage is not forgotten. To this end, the Institute works to document, preserve, and share the stories of the South’s Jewish communities through educational programming, archival research, and public programming.

The Institute’s programming includes a variety of educational workshops, lectures, and seminars, as well as a range of cultural activities and special projects. These programs are designed to engage a variety of audiences, from school children to senior citizens, in exploring the impact of Southern Jewish culture on the region and beyond. The Institute also maintains a library, archives, and museum, which provide visitors with access to a wealth of resources related to Southern Jewish history.

In addition to its educational and cultural work, the ISJL works to build bridges between the Jewish and non-Jewish communities of the South. Through its outreach initiatives, the Institute strives to create a greater understanding and appreciation of the contributions of Southern Jews to the region’s culture, economy, and history.
