The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is the region’s foremost forum devoted to the exploration and presentation of the art of our time. Founded in 1941, the Museum has grown from a small regional gallery into a nationally recognized institution with two locations in San Diego — the main downtown facility in the heart of the city’s vibrant downtown core, and a second location in La Jolla.
The Museum features an ever-changing array of exhibitions, education and public programs, and site-specific installations that offer visitors an opportunity to engage with the art of our time and to explore a variety of contemporary issues. With a collection of more than 4,500 works of art created since 1950, the Museum boasts one of the most significant holdings of postwar art in the country.
The Museum’s downtown location is housed in the historic Santa Fe Depot building, which was restored and transformed into a contemporary art museum in 1996. The Museum’s La Jolla location, dubbed the MCASD La Jolla, is located in a newly constructed building in the heart of La Jolla’s renowned Village shopping district.
The Museum offers a variety of public programs and educational experiences, including lectures, panel discussions, artist talks, film screenings, and workshops for all ages. With these programs, the Museum provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the art of our time and to engage in dialogue about the issues of our time.
