The Marion County Historical Society in Columbia, Mississippi, was formed in 1981 and is dedicated to preserving the history of Marion County. The Society collects artifacts and documents related to the area’s past, from the earliest human settlers to the present day. It also preserves, documents and interprets regional history and culture.
The Society is located in the former Marion County Courthouse, which was built in 1896 and is now home to the Society’s museum. The museum features exhibits and displays on the county’s history, including its role in the Civil War, its agricultural heritage, its Native American culture, and its place in the development of the Mississippi Delta.
The Society also holds regular programs and events, such as lectures, workshops, and educational programs. It publishes quarterly newsletters and an annual yearbook, which features stories, photographs, and other historical information about Marion County. The Society also sponsors an annual symposium, where scholars and community members present papers on local history.
In addition, the Society is actively involved in historic preservation and restoration efforts. It sponsors a preservation awards program to recognize individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to preserving the county’s history. The Society also works with local governments, organizations, and citizens to identify and protect endangered historic sites.
