Northeast Mississippi Museum located in Corinth, Mississippi is a small yet charming museum that offers a glimpse into the past of the area. The museum is housed in a two-story building that was built in 1903 and was originally the home of the former Corinth Mayor, John B. Little. One hundred years after this photograph was taken, my family moved into a house that sits on this site. I was a teenager when we moved.

Behind this wall . . . . . . is a space in another time . . .

. . . it was then an open field on the edge of the small village of Corinth, Mississippi.

That other today was early morning, October 3, 1862. A Union scouting party was crossing that field, this field, in this space, in this time, when Private Lewis Wilcox of the 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry grabbed the arm of Corporal James &quot;Hop-Frog&quot; Parks of the 16th Iowa Infantry . . . &quot;Parks! There through the trees – General Grant with his entourage!&quot;

As Parks lifted his binoculars in the thrill of better seeing the already famed aggressor general, a sniper's round (as Confederate troops were still on the outskirts of the other side of the town, this sniper was thought to be a local rebel sympathizer) shattered Parks's skull, and he fell dead at Wilcox's feet.

Wilcox died the next day, when his Company was called to retake the Union Battery Powell from the Confederate troops who had taken the Battery that same morning.
