Now that, is a beauty. Minneapolis-Moline. Made on Hiawatha Ave back in the 50s. I have a soft spot for antique orange tractors from Minneapolis.

The Slowly Drying Well Choosing photo spots on this 261 outing was not such an easy task - having been through here many times before, I often feel as though I've overshot this region and feel a little out of ideas from time to time, and the rain certainly did not help matters. Still, we were able to come up with some stuff on the fly! At Wells Avenue - a location all of us seem to nearly take the wrong turnoff on, hah - we decided to go long-distance. Nothing fancy, but hey, not everything needs to be.

Of note here, though a little hard to see, is the old Milwaukee codeline, which continues to linger on today.

Independent Indecision Ah, Glencoe, the town that's usually the end of the line for the 261s excursions on the TC&amp;W. It's home to a classic Milwaukee Road depot, much of the TC&amp;Ws motive power and other equipment, as well as an old grain elevator that reads 'Independent Elev.' across its sides. A wonderful thing to get in the frame, you'd think - hey, I'm from the midwest, we like our elevators.

As trackspeed dropped significantly, we had lots of time to pick a spot, but nowhere I stood satisfied me enough. Going wide? Didn't quite cut it. Telesmash? It's just the crossing cantilevers. I decided to hell with it and to play it real, real simple with a wide angle parking lot shot. The engine hadn't been throwing up much smoke or steam through the day, so that would at least fit the elevator between the cantilevers. Of course, when the 261 did actually cut through the light rain and hit the crossing, it did indeed smoke things up for once. Hah, such as it goes.

I think my partner here was rather surprised as to how much indecision I had in picking a spot and how casually myself - and others - crossed the roads back and forth here. Kind of funny, to be honest.

Saved for a Rainy Day The Saturday chase on the Milwaukee Road 261 was a rainy day, which has its plus sides and downsides, but boy, this train and rain seem to go together well. I was having deja vu to last years chase where day one also saw plenty of rain.

During our chase, we underestimated the speed we could get up to and the speed of the train. The original shot at Cologne I was hoping for was a no-go with 261 westbound, so we had to press on. However, on the way back, we had the opportunity to actually go and wait for the train thanks to the usual stop at Bongards. When they started to put everything back together and get people on, we took off.

I tried this shot last year, but with the sun fighting me that time, it wasn't the best. This time around, there were clouds to let me take a second crack at it. Milwaukee Road 32A certainly stands out against the early fall colours as it enters Cologne, passing by the elevator track. We wouldn't see any sun the rest of the day, though it did try its hardest to peak out of the clouds from time to time. The 261 is definitely the star of the show, but the 32A is also a fine shot on its own.

Back to Bongards In an unusual twist, I actually ended up riding on the 261 for the 2022 Gourmet Express, along with my girlfriend. I very rarely end up riding any of these trains I chase and photograph (granted, hard to do when most of them are freight, but hey), so it was certainly a nice change of pace compared to my other adventures.

This, however, did not stop me from bringing my camera onboard with me. When we arrived back at Bongards after having gone well past Glencoe and having the 32A take over for a while, some maintenance was done to the steam engine and we all had a chance to wander the area. Then, it was photo runby time.

Two photo runbys gave me two opportunities for photos, and happily I was able to get something good from one of them. The Milwaukee Road 261 put on one hell of a show as it thundered past. Bongards is where we seem to spend a large amount of time on these trips up north, but it's for good reason. What a fine place for a photo.

Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star (or T-Bird) is a subsonic American jet trainer. It was produced by Lockheed and made its first flight in 1948. The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 starting as TP-80C/TF-80C in development, then designated T-33A. It was used by the U.S. Navy initially as TO-2, then TV-2, and after 1962, T-33B. The last operator of the T-33, the Bolivian Air Force, retired the type in July 2017, after 44 years of service.

The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 by lengthening the fuselage by slightly more than 3 feet (1 m) and adding a second seat, instrumentation, and flight controls. It was initially designated as a variant of the P-80/F-80, the TP-80C/TF-80C.

Design work on the Lockheed P-80 began in 1943, with the first flight on 8 January 1944. Following on the Bell P-59, the P-80 became the first jet fighter to enter full squadron service in the United States Army Air Forces. As more advanced jets entered service, the F-80 took on another role—training jet pilots. The two-place T-33 jet was designed for training pilots already qualified to fly propeller-driven aircraft.

Originally designated the TF-80C, the T-33 made its first flight on 22 March 1948 with Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier at the controls. Production at Lockheed ran from 1948 to 1959. The US Navy used the T-33 as a land-based trainer starting in 1949. It was designated the TV-2, but was redesignated the T-33B in 1962. The Navy operated some ex-USAF P-80Cs as the TO-1, changed to the TV-1 about a year later. A carrier-capable version of the P-80/T-33 family was subsequently developed by Lockheed, eventually leading to the late 1950s to 1970s T2V-1/T-1A SeaStar. The two TF-80C prototypes were modified as prototypes for an all-weather two-seater fighter variant, which became the F-94 Starfire. A total of 6,557 T-33s were produced: 5,691 of them by Lockheed, 210 by Kawasaki, and 656 by Canadair.

Saint Matthew's Fifteen years ago this week we attended my class reunion at Macalester College, then stopped at my sister's place in Fernando, Minnesota. While we visited I caught this photo of a decoration at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, one of two congregations she was serving.
