Paper Birch Split Rock State Park, Beaver Bay, Minnesota - along the North Shore, the birch trees are dying off with places where ½ the trees are dying. It’s an odd configuration with them broken off about 8-10 feet high as if a giant saw came along and chopped them all at once. This is one of the healthy trees, but surrounded by a lot of downed ones.
I haven’t seen a good explanation other than that they weren’t initially here in such numbers but grew fairly opportunistically as a result of fires and over logging clearing out the more native pines. It seems that they may have overpopulated and between deer and drought are dying off.
