Having had close friends in San Jose over the years, I’ve visited it often. Of the three large cities in the Bay Area, San Jose was the most spread out both in terms of housing and work, so I was surprised when they started building light rail in the mid 1980’s. Though I’m a strong believer in replacing autos with public transit, it turns out my earlier and rudimentary questioning was right – per the Wikipedia article linked below, the system is widely criticized for being one of the least used and most heavily subsidized. Despite that, the few times I’ve ridden it, it has been very convenient and comfortable. Hopefully with the reuse of the historic downtown, it’s value will become clearer.
