The American Swedish Institute (ASI) is a cultural center located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1929 by Swedish immigrant, newspaper publisher, and philanthropist Swan J. Turnblad, ASI is dedicated to preserving and sharing Swedish and Nordic culture with the community. The institute consists of the Turnblad Mansion, a historic home built in 1908, and the Nelson Cultural Center, which opened in 2012.

The Turnblad Mansion houses a museum, library, and archives, and hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as lectures, concerts, film screenings, and workshops. The museum contains a collection of more than 13,000 objects, including costumes, furniture, paintings, textiles, and artifacts from the 18th century to the present. Visitors can also explore the library, which holds books, magazines, and other materials related to Swedish and Nordic culture.

The Nelson Cultural Center features a restaurant and bar, as well as a gallery, shop, and event space. The gallery showcases rotating exhibitions of artwork and artifacts from the ASI collections, as well as works from contemporary Nordic and Swedish artists. The shop offers a variety of Scandinavian-inspired goods, including books, toys, music, and jewelry.

The ASI serves as an important cultural hub, connecting visitors with Swedish and Nordic heritage through its programming and collections. By engaging the community through its educational and cultural resources, ASI strives to advance understanding and appreciation of the region’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
