NAMES PROJECT FOUNDATION
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
The NAMES Project Foundation in San Francisco, California, is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1987 to preserve and honor the lives of those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. The foundation was started by Cleve Jones, an activist and longtime friend of the late San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, and was inspired by the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a memorial to those killed by AIDS-related illnesses.
The NAMES Project Foundation is dedicated to educating the public about the AIDS epidemic, honoring those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses, and providing support to those living with HIV/AIDS. The foundation houses the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which is the largest community arts project in the world, and is the repository for more than 48,000 individual 3-by-6-foot quilt panels. The quilt is made up of individual tributes to people who have died of AIDS-related illnesses and is displayed in its entirety once every two years.
The foundation also holds special events, such as the annual “Light in the Window” display, which is held in San Francisco each December. This event features a display of quilt panels that are lit up in the windows of the San Francisco City Hall. The foundation also provides support and resources to those living with HIV/AIDS, including referrals to medical care, housing, and other services.
In addition to its work in the San Francisco area, the NAMES Project Foundation also works in several other cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Amsterdam, and Singapore. The foundation is committed to preserving the memory of those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses and to providing support and resources to those living with HIV/AIDS.
