'Mr. Peanut is the advertising logo and mascot of Planters, an American snack-food company now owned by Hormel.
He is depicted as an anthropomorphic peanut in its shell, wearing the formal clothing of an old-fashioned gentleman, with a top hat, monocle, white gloves, spats, and cane. He is reported of British heritage and has the proper name of Bartholomew Richard Fitzgerald-Smythe.
Planters Peanut Company was founded in 1906 in Wilkes-Barre (PA) by Amedeo Obici, and incorporated two years later as the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company.
In 1916, a young schoolboy, Antonio Gentile submitted drawings of an anthropomorphic peanut to a design contest.[4]
When his design was chosen, commercial artist Andrew S. Wallach then added the monocle, top hat, and cane to create the iconic image.
Gentile's family originally received five dollars for winning the contest. Obici befriended them and paid Antonio’s, and four of his siblings', way through college.
By the mid-1930s, the raffish figure had come to symbolize the entire peanut industry.
In January 2020, Planters announced that Mr. Peanut had died. He was 104.
The jaunty and jovial pitchman recognized around the globe died during a pre-Super Bowl ad in 2020. Fans around the world reacted with social media enthusiasm and skepticism, but in the advertising world there was a sense that an era had passed.
In February 2021, Kraft Heinz announced it would sell Planters and its other nuts businesses to Hormel for $3.35 billion, a transaction consummated in June 2021.
Then in early 2023 Planters announced that things were going to get salty for Mr. Peanut in the February 2023 Super Bowl LVII.
The legume, who was supposedly killed off in the Super Bowl marketing stunt in 2020, returned to the gridiron spectacle for what looked to be an even more challenging prospect -- he was being 'roasted.'
