The Coast Guard Historical Society (CGHS) is a non-profit organization based in Leighton Alabama. It was founded in 1998 to promote the preservation and appreciation of the United States Coast Guard’s history and heritage. The Society’s mission is to promote the understanding of the Coast Guard’s distinctive role in America’s history, culture, and maritime heritage.

The CGHS is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting artifacts and documents related to the Coast Guard’s history. The Society encourages public awareness of the Coast Guard’s mission through educational programs, lectures, exhibitions, and publications. The CGHS also works to protect and conserve the Coast Guard’s historic sites and monuments.

The CGHS has a number of initiatives, such as the “Shipmates” program, which raises funds to preserve and restore historic Coast Guard ships. The Society also organizes an annual conference and publishes a quarterly journal, Coast Guard History.

The CGHS maintains a research library, which is open to the public, and houses a large collection of books, photographs, manuscripts, and other materials related to the Coast Guard’s history. The Society is also involved in a number of projects, such as creating a museum for the Coast Guard in Leighton Alabama, and restoring and preserving the historic U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Harriet Lane in Mobile, Alabama.

The CGHS is open to all members of the public and encourages their involvement in their efforts to preserve and promote the Coast Guard’s history. The Society’s activities are funded by membership dues, donations, and grants.
