The Center of African American Art and History (CAAAH) in Holland, Michigan is a unique and enriching cultural experience. Established in 2017, the CAAAH is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research, education, and celebration of African American arts, culture, and history. Freeze-thaw cycles of many nights and days for coarse, hard lake ice Only a few inches from the crystals of icy snow, this few captures the light and texture of the lumpy surface, maybe 50 yards from the line of sandy beach to the right (east). Deep blue of Lake Michigan before shoreline ice melts A visit to the Saugatuck State Park on the North Trail onto the beach shows how much snow and ice remains, despite several unseasonably warm days during the first weeks of March 2025. Maybe 250 or 300 yards of snow and ice before open water The part from sand to the lumpy crest in the distance felt solid and quiet enough (no groans from cracking ice), but the similar distance from crest to open water was actively moving and churning. Perhaps a change in wind, along with rising temperatures and longer daylight hours will send the loose cover away from the shore and thus speeding the melting time. A generation or two earlier there would sometimes be freak snow accumulation in middle or late May that soon melted. Lake Michigan shoreline before winter melts away In two months the 3-day Memorial Day Weekend will fill the beach with holiday visitors, possibly in shorts if the weather is warm. Sandy terrain along the Lakeshore at Saugatuck State Park Thanks to the small and large plant life covering much of the dune surfaces, the topography is relatively stable from year to year or even decade to decade.
