The Detour Reef Light Preservation Society is a non-profit organization located in Drummond Island, Michigan. The society was established in 1998 with the aim of preserving the historic Detour Reef Light station which was built in 1931. The light station is situated on a remote rocky outcrop, 20 miles east of Drummond Island in the northern part of Lake Huron.

The mission of the society is to maintain the light station's structures and artifacts, as well as to promote its historical significance and educate visitors about its history and importance. The society is run by a board of directors and a team of volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the lighthouse and its surrounding structures.

Detour village museum after hours - a peek in the window The volunteer docent had locked up only a minute before, but was filling in for another volunteer and therefore had no key of his own. As a result, it was impossible to have a closer look &quot;after hours.&quot; But a little of the interior and artifacts on view can be understood from the photo. One of the defining features of the village is its geography: ferries between the mainland and Drummond Island leave from the dock just a stone's throw from the museum. And the finishing section of the navigable shipping canal is off shore, running between the Soo Locks to the north 65 miles and here on Lake Huron. So the museum has shipping gear from generations ago on the lawn outside and with smaller items indoors here.

Sturdy design of early 20th century Between the 1920s and 1950s the solid rectangular structure with steel trusses to support a curved roof provided a quick and economical way to enclose a relatively large space. This white building has this same look, so it is a kind of time traveler from its year of completion and original business operations now across several generations and differing owners and uses leading up to the present.

This photo includes part of the view of a fishing boat at the right, one operated under the fishing rights of local Native Americans. After a handful of 1800s treaties the rights to hunt and fish and gather wild products of the fields and woods continues today and the sovereignty of the tribe's own decision-making, land-use, and so on is reserved indefinitely, too.

Barely visible across the river on the Drummond Island side is a huge section of broken limestone laid down geologically long ago, but today extracted as revenue source for the developers.
