FREDERIK MEIJER GARDENS AND SCULPTURE FOUNDATION

GRAND RAPIDS, MI

Cover story from 80 years ago (1944) At the grocery store check out lanes the magazines and snacks like candy and meat jerky are concentrated while the shoppers are idle in their wait for the cashier. Among the magazines in this photo is National Geographic Magazine with its signature yellow border. Almost no one has personal memories of 1944 when the D-Day photo was snapped, although a few people remember their family members or neighbors who went to the overseas war effort.

So when most shoppers roll their carts past the shelves of glossy, color magazines and happen to spot this one, probably they mingle cinematic versions and fragments of history classes during high school or college. As a result the events have a tidy quality of being past-tense, certain and with agreed upon point of view and assessment. However, the people doing the killing and being killed had lives before and after the months they were in harm's way, wearing government issue uniforms. So a truer way to see the cover photo is (a) in color, (b) showing civilians temporarily gathered into a fighting force, and (c) with outcomes largely unknown - to live or die that day and the next and the one after that.
