Branch County Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Coldwater, Michigan. Big Steam for a Small Town The previous day, I wasn't able to get into Hillsdale in time to watch the 765 roll into town quite in time. On day two, I did! Hillsdale, MI was the halfway point for the tri-state excursions the NKP765 performed over the weekend, where the train would come and park up for a few hours to let the passengers disembark and spend time in town. With a sort of small festival going on in town and the pair of steam engines from the Little River Railroad, there was certainly plenty for all of them to do. For my part, I was really just there for the steam engines. 765s entrance to town was timely and as brilliant as steam engines so often are, and the small engines from Little River put on a fine little show as they performed their short trips north out of town. For my part, the few hours of downtime were certainly nice to study Maps and chat. Hillsdale was alright in my book.
Low Clearance I question my eyesight at times. I saw this location on Maps and thought it was a crossing, but it was in fact a bridge. I did this with Big Boy once too, near the Kaskaskia. Dunno quite how this keeps happening, but, hey, bridges are good. I like bridges. Turns out the bridge was better than a crossing anyway. The small bridge near the Hillsdale burbs made for one of the more dramatic places to catch the NKP 765. Sometimes, surprises end up being better than the pre-planned shots, I think.
Set the Scene One of the downsides of my last minute decision to come out to the IN and shoot the 765 was my general lack of knowledge about the area. Sure, I did a little Google Maps-ing, but not enough, and that does only get you so far. Often times, unless it's an area I have previous experience in or have seen photos or videos of a spot, I find that most of my photo spots are areas I just come across. For instance, near Montgomery, MI, a lone tree leaning over a small creek - which google assures me is the 'West Fork West Branch Saint Joseph River' - and the small concrete bridge just begged to be captured in a photo. Never seen it before, didn't even spot it on Maps, I simply ran across it and had to stop. Another chaser I'd briefly chatted with earlier, one of the many I'd see and meet throughout the weekend, was parked there, but everyone else was either racing for Reading or at the crossing just up ahead. Tree shade and bushes be damned, I have to say that Michigan was treating me and the 765 well already. As an aside, this is the first time I've shot any train in the lower peninsula of MI, and the first time shooting anything in MI since I visited the LS&I over a year ago. Feels like just yesterday. How time does fly, no?
