The Round Barn On M-79 near Nashville, Michigan. I first noticed this barn around fifty years ago when I accompanied my father to a meeting in Flint. I'm always glad to see it when I wander the backroads, though I rarely travel this specific route.

Steady stream of visitors to the butterfly greenhouse People come from great distances sometimes during the hatching weeks of March and April each year in the big tropical greenhouse at Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. To get there, though, the line leads through the Arid Landscape greenhouse (here) with its many forms of cactus. Press L for 'lightbox' to view the clip on a black background.
Forest floor shaped by glaciers now long gone Oak trees have taken over this landscape for many centuries, but when the glaciers stopped their southern movement and eventually melted year after year, much smaller plants arrived first and quick-growing trees like birch and alder created forests. Due to the soil quality, though, the climax forest succession of species in this part of west Michigan is not the frequently seen maple-beech mix, but rather it is oak and some pine, too. This view is 2 miles north of Lowell and the Flat River and shows a little of the long-distance hiking trail at the right edge of the photo: the NCT (North Country Trail) with its national office in the downtown mainstreet of Lowell.
