Kent County Council for Historic Preservation (KCCHP) is a non-profit organization based in Grand Rapids, Michigan dedicated to preserving and protecting the region’s historic resources. Founded in 1974, KCCHP is a volunteer-driven organization that works with local, state, and federal agencies to identify, preserve, and protect historic properties in Kent County. Through its commitment to education and advocacy, KCCHP strives to ensure that the county’s historic sites are accessible and appreciated by future generations.

KCCHP works to promote historic preservation through various programs, including historic site surveys, grants and loans, technical assistance, and educational outreach. The organization also works to assist local governments and private landowners to ensure that historic resources in Kent County are preserved and protected. In addition, KCCHP is active in advocating for federal and state legislation to preserve historic properties and promotes preservation through public events and programs.

KCCHP also works to protect endangered historic sites and buildings by working with local governments and private landowners to find solutions that will preserve the properties for future generations. Through its efforts, KCCHP has helped to save numerous historic sites in Kent County from demolition or development, including the Kent County Courthouse, the Kent County Jail, and St. Mary’s Church.

KCCHP is committed to preserving and protecting the region’s historic properties and educating the public about the importance of historic preservation. The organization works to ensure that Kent County’s unique history and culture are preserved for future generations to enjoy.

So many places to look in this multi-media exhibition If artifacts are 3-D and photos are 2-D, then perhaps lines of text can be thought of as 1-D. Unlike the still photos, the (rear-projection) video loop at the center of this snapshot from the "Mandela: the official exhibition" includes an audio layer with specially arranged speakers that confine the playback to the immediate vicinity of viewers, rather than filling the exhibit hall. Also in the snapshot is reflection on the video display in which part of the far wall to the left of the large portrait of Rev. Desmond Tutu, including a visitor reading the label text. Beaver pelt alive and dead For the museum display, of course, all materials are non-living, but this photo shows how different the beavers' skin looks on the animal versus grouped into an adult-size human overcoat (and top hat). The recent book by Leila Philip, Beaverland, and the recent TV program on PBS.org, Beaver Fever, introduce the place of "nature's civil engineers" to readers and viewers that makes the fur trapping seem strange indeed. Sharp tools and keen eye to carve ivory Before mass slaughter and globally reaching supply chains, obtaining a piece of ivory and then having the skill and the tools to carve it contributed to the impact it made on viewers. Sometimes an artificial material and precision molding made possible mass production so that ordinary people could see and own something similar to those earlier pieces of art. Now the creature whose ivory was taken, the traders who brought it to the craftsperson, the carver, the buyer, and many of the generations whose hands this piece passed between are dead. Ever since the piece arrived at the museum and became part of the permanent display, many more people have been able to admire the piece and to ponder the cost of obtaining it than even before. As for theme, it seems unlikely that a sculptor would do a "photograph" to capture normal life contemporary to his own reference point. Display in so many dimensions, "Mandela- the official exhibition" From 1918 to 2013 Nelson R. Mandela was part of the planet's reckoning with colonialism, racism and discrimination, as well as reconciliation. This traveling exhibition is divided into chapters of his life and the surrounding context of the decades of social changes he was part of in the Republic of South Africa. In this photo the years from prison release in 1992 to Nobel prize for peace in 1993 and election to Presidency are showcased, along with episodes of violence. Within the photo are bigger-than-life, back-lit silhouettes, photos and text, and the beloved trench coat of Mr. Mandela that served him well in the many travels he did after 27 years confined as political prisoner. Not shown in this view are video displays with looped segments of dramatic moments, as well as ambient sounds that can be heard narrowly in the vicinity of particular exhibition spots.
