The Historical Society of Boston, Massachusetts is an independent non-profit organization that was founded in 1791 by Paul Revere and William Scollay. It is one of the oldest historical societies in the United States and has become a leader in the preservation and interpretation of Boston’s history. The society has a vast array of collections that are open to the public, including rare books and manuscripts, maps, photographs, fine art prints, furniture and decorative arts, and architectural drawings. It also houses the city’s archives, which date back to the mid-17th century.

The society hosts a variety of programs and events throughout the year, including educational programming on its collections, lectures, and other special events. The Society’s library is open to the public and contains over 10,000 volumes of materials related to Boston’s history, including early editions of works by authors such as Cotton Mather and William Pynchon. Additionally, the Society has an online presence and offers digital resources such as its digitized collections, the Digital Encyclopedia of Boston, and its online catalog.

The Historical Society of Boston also serves as a repository for a number of private and public collections. These include the records of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, early American documents, and the library of the Massachusetts Historical Society. In addition, the Society is a partner in the Massachusetts Archives Project and is a member of the American Association for State and Local History.
