Phyllis A Marine Association is a non-profit organization based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the fishing vessel Phyllis A. 'Cogswell's Grant' -- Historic New England Essex (MA) October 2022 Per Wikipedia:

John Cogswell (1592–1669) was a leading figure and large landowner in the early history of Ipswich, Massachusetts and a deputy for the General Court of Massachusetts. He is the immigrant ancestor to a large number of notable Americans.

Cogswell, born in Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire, England, was a successful merchant in London before migrating to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Rev. William Thompson, vicar of Westbury in 1615.

Twenty years later, in 1635, John and Elizabeth Cogswell and their family embarked on the 'Angel Gabriel', for Massachusetts. However, the ship was driven onto rocks off the coast of Maine during the Great Colonial Hurricane of 1635. The Cogswell family survived, salvaging most of what they lost from the wreck and headed south for Boston before settling in Ipswich.

In that town in 1636, John Cogswell was granted 300 acres of land (now known as 'Cogswell's Grant') and he received freeman status to allow him to run for public office.

He eventually became a deputy to the General Court for Ipswich, in addition to fulfilling functions for the town.

Cogswell died in 1669. He was honored with a five-mile long funeral procession followed by a service conducted by Rev. William Hubbard. The historian Darrett B. Rutman states that Cogswell's will is &quot;exceptional in providing for the formal education of a daughter.&quot;

Although he was a man of reputation in his time, his greatest legacy for posterity is surviving the great hurricane and leaving many celebrated descendants.

Per the Cogswell's Grant website:

In 1937, Bertram and Nina Little purchased 165 acres of Cogswell's Grant property overlooking the Essex River.

They carefully restored the 1728 farmhouse. Cogswell’s Grant became a near perfect setting for the Littles’ antiques, but was also important as a working farm and family retreat where they relaxed and entertained.

The rooms overflow with folk art portraits, painted furniture, redware, hooked rugs, weathervanes, and decoys. It is one of the only places where you can visit such a collection in the home for which it was assembled.

In 1984, Mrs. Little transferred property ownership to Historic New England, reserving life tenancy rights for herself and her family. In letters at this time, she outlined her desire for Historic New England to maintain the entire property, not just the house and collections, but also the fields themselves in their traditional character as a working farm and as open space.

Mrs. Little wrote: “As time goes on, I realize that the upland and marsh surrounding Cogswell’s Grant in Essex are becoming increasingly important as a conservation area, and that fast diminishing wetlands as a necessary protection for coastal wildlife should be firmly protected as a natural resource.”

Historic New England is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, charitable organization, whose legal name is the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities.
