The Pilgrim John Howland Society in Chelmsford, Massachusetts is a non-profit, historical and genealogical organization dedicated to the study, preservation and celebration of the life and legacy of John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower. The Society was founded in 1991 as a collaboration between the Chelmsford Historical Society and the Mayflower Society to further research and promote the legacy of John Howland and his family.
The Society offers a variety of activities to honor John Howland and to educate the public about the history of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. Each June, the Society hosts a John Howland Day celebration in Chelmsford, which includes a reenactment of the Mayflower’s voyage to the New World, a parade and a ceremony at the John Howland Monument. The Society also sponsors lectures, seminars, and genealogical research trips, as well as a summer camp for children to learn about John Howland and the Mayflower.
The Society’s website offers a variety of resources for those researching the Howland family, including a comprehensive genealogy database, a library of books and articles about John Howland, and a museum exhibit about the Mayflower voyage. The Society also publishes a quarterly journal, the Howland Quarterly, which features articles about the history of the Howland family and the legacy of the Mayflower.
