Quincy: Adams NHP - Peacefield The Old House at Peacefield was purchased by John and Abigail Adams on September 23, 1787 and the property remained home to the Adams for four generations. It was here that Adams spent his post presidency in retirement, where Abigail died of typhoid in 1818 and where John died of a heart attack in 1826. Originally constructed in 1731 as a summer house for Leonard Vassall, a sugar plantation owner, it evolved from a working farm to a country estate during the years of Adams family ownership. Over the years President John Quincy Adams, First Lady Louisa Catherine Adams, their son Civil War Minister to Great Britain Charles Francis Adams, and Charles' sons, literary historians Henry Adams and Brooks Adams all lived at Peacefield before it was turned into a museum run by the Adams Memorial Society and then later incorporated into the National Park Service in 1946.

Adams National Historical Park, formerly Adams National Historic Site, preserves Peacefield, was designated as part of the National Park Service in 1946. The thirteen-acre park is comprised of eleven differential structures including the Birthplaces of United States Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams; the Old House at Peace field, home to four generations of the Adams family; and the Stone Library, believed to be the first presidential library.
