The Robert Treat Paine House is an historic home located in the Auburndale neighborhood of Newton, Massachusetts. It was built in 1793 and named after Robert Treat Paine, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first attorney general of Massachusetts. The house is a two-story, brick Federal-style mansion with a hip roof, dormers, and a central chimney. The front façade features a grand entrance with a semi-elliptical fanlight and sidelights, as well as a second-story Palladian window. The interior of the house boasts original features such as a central hall with a spiral staircase, ornate plasterwork, and decorative mantels. The house has undergone several renovations and additions over the years, including a two-story ell in the 19th century and a rear addition in the 20th century. In 1975, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Robert Treat Paine House is owned and maintained by the Newton Historical Society, which offers tours of the property and hosts events throughout the year. The house is a significant example of Federal-style architecture and an important piece of Massachusetts history.
