The Rowland Institute for Science in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is an independent, non-profit research center dedicated to a single purpose: to understand, explain, and exploit the physical and biological phenomena underlying living systems. Founded in 1982 by the late Nobel Laureate, Edwin H. Land, the Institute is a center of excellence for interdisciplinary and exploratory research, drawing on the insights and expertise of scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines. The Institute advances science through a program of basic research, applied research, and education.

The Institute's researchers come from disciplines as diverse as chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, and mathematics.
