BALTIMORE, MD

Baltimore - Fort McHenry: Barracks Barracks No. 1 was used to house enlisted men. One room was for non-commissioned officers (corporals and sergeants), perhaps a second for musicians and artificers (skilled military craftsmen). The remaining room was for privates. At the time of the War of 1812 the building was one story, with a second story added in the 1830s.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, a pentagonal bastion fortification located on Locust Point, is best known for its role in the War of 1812, where it withstood 25 hours of bombardment by the British Navy, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." The fort was later used as a military prison during the Civil War and as a hospital in World War I, and was designated a national park in 1925 and a National Monument and Historic Shrine in 1939, becoming the only dual-designated national monument and historic shrine in the United States.

Project Liberty Ship Inc is a non-profit organization based in Baltimore, Maryland, founded in 1988. Its primary objective is to preserve the history of the Liberty Ship, a cargo ship built in large numbers during World War II. The organization is dedicated to restoring and maintaining the SS John W. Brown, one of only two Liberty Ships that remain operational in the world.

The SS John W. Brown was built in 1942 and was used to transport goods and troops during World War II. After the war, it was used for commercial purposes until it was retired in 1982. The ship was then purchased by Project Liberty Ship Inc in 1988 and restored to its original condition. It is now a museum ship, offering visitors a glimpse into the history of the Liberty Ships and their role in the war effort.

In addition to maintaining the SS John W. Brown, Project Liberty Ship Inc also provides educational programs for schools and community groups. These programs focus on the history of the Liberty Ships and the role they played in World War II.

Project Liberty Ship Inc is run entirely by volunteers and relies on donations and grants to fund its operations. The organization is dedicated to preserving this piece of American history for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
