Annapolis - USNA: Japanese Torpedo This type 93 Torpedo is the largest enemy weapon of its kind encountered in World War II. It is 29½ feet long, 24 inches in diameter and carries over 1,000 lbs. of explosive in the war head. At the low speed setting of 40 knots a maximum range of approximately 30,000 yards is obtained. Annapolis - USNA: Bridage Chapel Crypt John Paul Jones' remains are interred in the crypt beneath the Naval Academy Chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. The deck surrounding the crypt is inscribed the names of his ships: Bonhomme Richard, Alliance, Serapis, Ariel, Alfred, Providence, and Ranger. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter. Annapolis - USNA: Dahlgren Hall Dahlgren Hall, named for Civil War-era Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, was built in 1903--the first of Ernest Flagg's Beaux Arts designed buildings on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy. Initially constructed as an armory to house the training weaponry for the growing Brigade, it was also home for festival events like basketball games, graduations, and dances. For years it housed a full sized ice rink. Dahlgren, was used by the Federal Navy during the Civil War, a forerunner of the big naval gun of today. Annapolis - USNA: Navy Bill Navy Bill, a sculpture of the United States Naval Academy's mascot, Bill the Goat, a billy goat, located inside Gate 1 oof the Academy, was designed by Clemente Spampinato in 1956 and presented by the Class of 1915 on May 15, 1957. The Naval Academy has had a goat as its mascot since 1890 when, according to legend, on their march from the ferry station at Highland Falls up the steep hill to West Point to play the first Army-Navy football game, the Naval Cadets (as they were then known) saw a goat outside the noncoms' houses at West Point and promptly commandeered "Billy" for their mascot. Since that time the goat has remained as the recognized mascot of the U.S. Naval Academy. Annapolis: Maryland State House - State House Caucus Room The State House Caucus Room, evolving through various functions since its 18th-century origins, now facilitates legislative meetings and exhibits the USS Maryland silver service. Initially a records storage area, it became the House of Delegates' jurisdiction before showcasing Maryland's Civil War flags and then serving as a visitor center. In 2011 it was redecorated with a chracteristic deep red velvet wall fabric, overseen by architect Johnson Berman, and renamed. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Frederick Douglass This statue of Frederick Douglass, designed by StudioEIS, was installed in the Old House of Delegates Chamber in 2019. Frederick Douglass, born enslaved in Talbot County, Maryland, escaped to freedom and rose to become a leading abolitionist and an influential voice for human rights in 19th-century America. Douglass is depicted here at age forty-six, based on photographs from the period. Matthew Henson, who was born in Charles County, became the first African American to reach the North Pole, on April 6, 1906, during the Arctic expedition of US Navy Commander Robert Edwin Peary. He is recognized as a co-discover of the North Pole, with Peary. This plaque it is the first state-funded memorial to an African American. On December 23, 1783, General George Washington came before Congress to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Just three weeks later, on January 14, 1784, Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the Revolutionary War, thus making Annapolis the new nation's first peacetime capital. The room's furniture arrangement and the Ladies Balcony reflect meticulous research on 18th-century Congressional protocols.
