BASILICA OF THE ASSUMPTION

BALTIMORE, MD

Scant Time for Practice Due to cloudy and rainy weather, my wife, Leona, and I are finding scant time to practice our photography for the April 8 solar eclipse. We waited all day today to get a couple of photos at about 1749 EDT. Still, the Sun's disc in this photo is mottled by thin clouds. Canon EOS R5 w. 800mm Canon lens, on a SolarQuest solar finder and tracker, certified solar filter.

The Basilica of the Assumption is a historic Catholic church located in Baltimore, Maryland. It was designed by the famous American architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who also designed the U.S. Capitol building. The basilica was constructed between 1806 and 1821 and is considered to be one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the United States.

The basilica's exterior features a grand domed roof, massive columns, and intricate carvings. Its interior is equally impressive, with soaring ceilings, marble floors, and ornate stained-glass windows. The altar is made of white marble and features a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The basilica was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971 and has since undergone extensive renovations to preserve its historic beauty. In addition to its religious significance, the basilica is also an important cultural landmark and has been the site of numerous concerts and events.

Today, the Basilica of the Assumption remains an active church and is open to visitors for daily Mass and tours. It is considered to be one of the most significant historic sites in Baltimore and a must-visit destination for architecture and history enthusiasts.
