Annapolis - USNA Museum: Japanese Arming Vane This arming vane from a Japanese bomb was found after the attack at Pearl Harbor. The United States Naval Academy Museum, located at Preble Hall within the Academy campus, features two floors of exhibits about the development and role of the U.S. Navy, spread across area of 12,000 square feet with four galleries. The museum's history dates back to 1845, when it was founded as the Naval School Lyceum. In 1849, President James K. Polk directed the Navy's collection of historic flags be sent to the new Naval School at Annapolis for care and display, establishing one of the museum's oldest collections. The Naval Academy Lyceum of the 19th and early 20th centuries was located in several places around the Naval Academy Yard, before the construction of Preble Hall in 1939. From 2007–2008, Preble Hall underwent a complete renovation to turn the building into a modern museum, which officially reopened in the summer of 2009. The United States Naval Academy, the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, was established in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft to educate midshipmen for service in the officer corps of the United States Navy and United States Marine Core. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the academy each summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate and commission each year. The 338-acre campus, known as the "Yard," is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn, and is home to many historic sites, buildings and monuments.

The Historic Annapolis Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Annapolis, Maryland, dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic and cultural heritage of Annapolis. Founded in 1952, the organization operates several historic sites in the city, including the William Paca House and Garden, the James Brice House, and the Historic Annapolis Museum and Store.

The William Paca House and Garden is a national historic landmark that was once home to William Paca, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and third governor of Maryland. The James Brice House is another historic landmark, built in 1767, and is considered one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in America.

The Historic Annapolis Museum and Store features exhibits on the history of Annapolis, including its colonial and maritime heritage, as well as a gift shop with books, souvenirs, and locally-made products.

The foundation also offers educational programs, tours, and events throughout the year, including walking tours of the city, lectures, and workshops. Its mission is to preserve and promote the rich history and culture of Annapolis for future generations.

Annapolis - USNA Museum: USS Maine Artifacts The USS Maine, a second-class American battleship, sank in Havana Harbor in 1898 while protecting American interests during the Cuban revolt against the Spanish government. The cause of the sinking has never ben determined, but it railed American public opinion nonetheless, with the battle cry of "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!" contributing to the outbreak of the Spanish–American War. (5) Keys to the magazines of the battleship Maine. It is now believed that gunpowder in one of the magazines was responsible for the destruction of the ship. (6) This cap ribbon identified the wearer as belonging to Maine. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington Resigning His Commission Washington Resigning His Commission, hanging in the Grand Staircase at the Maryland State House, was painted by Edwin White in 1858. This monumental painting depicts the scene in the Old Senate Chamber on December 23, 1783, when General George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the victorious Continental Army. White took some liberties in depicting those present at the ceremony, including Martha Washington and her niece who were actually at the Washington home in Mount Vernon. The Maryland State House, located inside State Circle, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The current two-story brick building, the third statehouse on the site, was constructed from 1772 to 1797 to the Georgian style design of Joseph Horatio Anderson and features the largest wooden dome in the United States constructed without nails. An black and gold Italian marble annex was constructed between 1902 and 1906, replacing an earlier annex, under the supervision of Baltimore architects Baldwin & Pennington. From November 1783 to August 1784, Annapolis was the capital of the United States, and the Congress of Confederation, also known as the Continental Congress, met in the Maryland State House. It was in the Old Senate Chamber that George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783; and that that Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784, formally ending the American Revolutionary War.
Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington's resignation speech In 2007, the Maryland State Archives acquired George Washington's handwritten personal copy of the speech he read from on December 23, 1783 to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The copy is currently on display in the rotunda of the Maryland State House. The draft contains Washington's edits, showing the changes he made as he wrote, none more important than his crossing out of the words "final" and "ultimate" at the close of his speech, "I retire from the great theatre of action, -- and bidding an affectionate a final farewell to this August body, I here offer today deliver my Commission, and take my ultimate leave of all the employments of public life." These edits suggest that Washington intentionally left open the possibility of a return to public life. Annapolis: St. John's College - Woodward Hall The Barr-Buchanan Center at St. John's College, formerly known as Woodward Hall, was erected in 1899 and renovated in 1968. Originally named for Henry Williams Woodward, father of a board member and college benefactor, it served as the college library. Today is is hime to Graduate Institute offices and classrooms, including the Hartle Room and King William Room. St. John's College in Annapolis, with its origins tracing back to King William's School founded in 1696, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. Chartered in 1784, St. John's College absorbed King William's School when it opened in 1785. The small private liberal arts college, with a sister campus in Santa Fe, is known for its distinctive Great Books curriculum adopted in 1937.

The Baltimore Harbor Light is a sparkplug lighthouse near the Bay Bridge. The Light was first lit in 1908 and the focal height of the light is 52 feet. Since we left right on time, we were able to see it beautifully on the Starboard side (right) as we headed down the Chesapeake Bay. The cruise embarks from Baltimore, Maryland with stops in Charleston, South Carolina; Port Canaveral, Florida; Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas, and Nassau, Bahamas, before returning back to Baltimore.
