The Charles County Fire Museum Association Inc. (CCFMA) is a non-profit organization that works to preserve the history and culture of firefighting in Southern Maryland. The museum is located in La Plata, Maryland and is open to the public most Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 pm.
The museum is home to a variety of artifacts and documents that celebrate the history of firefighting in the region. The main display area features displays of antique firefighting equipment, including a hand-drawn ladder truck, a 1935 fire engine, and a display of uniforms and helmets from the earliest days of the fire service. The museum also has an extensive collection of photographs and documents from the region’s fire companies, and a library of books related to firefighting.
The CCFMA also offers educational programs and lectures on fire safety and firefighting history. There is a yearly fire safety camp for local children, and the museum is also used for various community events, such as parades and memorial services.
The CCFMA is funded by donations, memberships, and grants, and is supported by the Charles County Commissioners, the Charles County Fire and EMS Department, and the Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium. The museum is staffed by volunteers, and all are welcome to come and learn more about the history of firefighting in Charles County.
