Annapolis - USNA: Bridage Chapel Crypt John Paul Jones' remains are interred in the crypt beneath the Naval Academy Chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. The deck surrounding the crypt is inscribed the names of his ships: Bonhomme Richard, Alliance, Serapis, Ariel, Alfred, Providence, and Ranger. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter. The United States Naval Academy Chapel, or the Brigade of Midshipmen Chapel, was constructed between 1904 and 1908 in the Beaux Arts style by Ernest Flagg. The original design featured a Greek cross plan, with four equal transepts and a capacity of 1,200. In 1938, renovations under architect Paul Philippe Cret, added a nave, which changed the shape to a Latin cross, and raised seating capacity to 2,500. The chapel's copper dome, a focal point of not only the building and campus, but the city, with a cupola raising 193 feet above the main altar. The United States Naval Academy, the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, was established in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft to educate midshipmen for service in the officer corps of the United States Navy and United States Marine Core. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the academy each summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate and commission each year. The 338-acre campus, known as the "Yard," is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn, and is home to many historic sites, buildings and monuments. National Register #66000386

Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington Resigning His Commission Washington Resigning His Commission, hanging in the Grand Staircase at the Maryland State House, was painted by Edwin White in 1858. This monumental painting depicts the scene in the Old Senate Chamber on December 23, 1783, when General George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the victorious Continental Army. White took some liberties in depicting those present at the ceremony, including Martha Washington and her niece who were actually at the Washington home in Mount Vernon. The Maryland State House, located inside State Circle, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The current two-story brick building, the third statehouse on the site, was constructed from 1772 to 1797 to the Georgian style design of Joseph Horatio Anderson and features the largest wooden dome in the United States constructed without nails. Annapolis: St. John's College - Chase-Stone House The Chase-Stone House, at 235 King George Street, was built as a duplex home of the President and Vice-President of St, John's college in 1857. It was named after Samuel Chase and Thomas Stone---members of the college's original Board of Governors. It served as such until 1929, when it became a Greek fraternity house. With the college's shift to a Great Books program in 1937, fraternities were abolished and the house became a men's dormitory. In 1963, James Wood Burch undertook a complete renovation of the building. St. John's College in Annapolis, with its origins tracing back to King William's School founded in 1696, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. Chartered in 1784, St. John's College absorbed King William's School when it opened in 1785. The small private liberal arts college, with a sister campus in Santa Fe, is known for its distinctive Great Books curriculum adopted in 1937.

Annapolis: State House Square - Thurgood Marshall Memorial The Thurgood Marshall Memorial, designed by sculptor Antonio Tobias Mendez, was unveiled in Lawyer's Mall, or State House Square, in 1996. The memorial honors the great civil rights leader who became the first African American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. The memorial, standing on the site of the old Court of Appeals Building where Marshall argued some of his early civil rights cases, depicts a standing figure of the Baltimore native, facing two benches---one with a a young boy and a young girl, representing Marshall's 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown V Board of Education; and the other with a young man, representing Marshall's 1935 Maryland Court of Appeals case Murray v. Pearson, involving Donald Murray, Sr., the first African American to apply to the University of Maryland School of Law, whose application was rejected because of his race.
Annapolis: Cantler's Riverside Inn - Cantler's Crab Dip Cantler's crab dip is a secret recipe--Maryland blue claw crab meat mixed with melted cheeses and herbs, served with petite french baguettes. Maryland Blue crabs are a significant part of both Maryland's economy and culinary culture. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, but they associated with the Chesapeake Bay area, the blue crab's name comes from its bright blue claws and olive-green shell. Cantler's Riverside Inn, at 458 Forest Beach Road in Annapolis, was opened in 1974 by Jimmy and Linda Cantler. The riverfront crab house, now a Maryland insinuation, remains in the Cantler family and continues to serve steamed blue crab and other fresh Chesapeake seafood to watermen, boaters and land lovers.
