Annapolis - USNA: Bridage Chapel Crypt John Paul Jones' remains are interred in the crypt beneath the Naval Academy Chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. The deck surrounding the crypt is inscribed the names of his ships: Bonhomme Richard, Alliance, Serapis, Ariel, Alfred, Providence, and Ranger. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter. The United States Naval Academy Chapel, or the Brigade of Midshipmen Chapel, was constructed between 1904 and 1908 in the Beaux Arts style by Ernest Flagg. The original design featured a Greek cross plan, with four equal transepts and a capacity of 1,200. In 1938, renovations under architect Paul Philippe Cret, added a nave, which changed the shape to a Latin cross, and raised seating capacity to 2,500. The chapel's copper dome, a focal point of not only the building and campus, but the city, with a cupola raising 193 feet above the main altar. The United States Naval Academy, the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, was established in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft to educate midshipmen for service in the officer corps of the United States Navy and United States Marine Core. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the academy each summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate and commission each year. Annapolis: Maryland State House - State House Caucus Room The State House Caucus Room, evolving through various functions since its 18th-century origins, now facilitates legislative meetings and exhibits the USS Maryland silver service. Initially a records storage area, it became the House of Delegates' jurisdiction before showcasing Maryland's Civil War flags and then serving as a visitor center. In 2011 it was redecorated with a chracteristic deep red velvet wall fabric, overseen by architect Johnson Berman, and renamed. It was in the Old Senate Chamber that George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783; and that that Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784, formally ending the American Revolutionary War.
Annapolis: Maryland World War II Memorial The Maryland World War II Memorial, built on a grassy knoll along Route 450 overlooking the Severn River and Naval Academy Bridge, was designed by New York architect Secundino Fernandez and dedicated on July 23, 1998. The memorial consists of an open, four-sided amphitheater, surrounded by 48 nine-foot granite columns representing the then 48-states, and granite slabs inscribed with the names of 6,454 Marylanders who died in World War II. Baltimore Harbor Light from Embarkation Day Onboard the Vision of the Seas Eight Night Cruise to the Southeastern United States and Bahamas - February 16th, 2024 The beautiful Baltimore Harbor Light during embarkation day onboard the Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas for an eight night cruise from Baltimore, Maryland to the Southeastern United States and the Bahamas (February 16th, 2024 to February 24th, 2024). The Baltimore Harbor Light is a sparkplug lighthouse near the Bay Bridge. The Light was first lit in 1908 and the focal height of the light is 52 feet. Since we left right on time, we were able to see it beautifully on the Starboard side (right) as we headed down the Chesapeake Bay. The cruise embarks from Baltimore, Maryland with stops in Charleston, South Carolina; Port Canaveral, Florida; Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas, and Nassau, Bahamas, before returning back to Baltimore.
