Forest buffer maintenance in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Staff from the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay perform maintenance on a riparian forest buffer that had been planted on the farm of Brian Eckman in Peach Bottom, Pa., on July 7, 2022. The crew straightened the tubes protecting the young trees and fixed stakes that had become loose or broken. “Tree maintenance isn’t just important, it's critical,” said Jim Kauffman, Pennsylvania Forests Project Coordinator for the Alliance. “Ninety percent of trees planted would die without maintenance.” (Photo by Caroline Grass/Chesapeake Bay Program)

Concord Point Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located in Havre de Grace, Maryland, at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. It was built in 1827 and is one of the oldest lighthouses in continuous operation on the East Coast of the United States. The lighthouse is made of local granite and stands 36 feet tall.

The lighthouse has a unique design, featuring a hexagonal lantern room on top of a cylindrical tower. The lantern room originally housed a Fresnel lens, which was replaced by a modern optic in the 1920s. The light is visible for 14 miles and flashes every six seconds.

The lighthouse was manned by a keeper and his family until 1920, when it was automated. It was also used as a lookout during the Civil War, and Union soldiers stationed there successfully defended Havre de Grace from a Confederate attack in 1863.

Today, Concord Point Lighthouse is open to the public as a museum. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase to the top of the tower and enjoy panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay and Susquehanna River. The museum features exhibits about the history of the lighthouse, the role it played in local maritime commerce, and the daily life of lighthouse keepers. The lighthouse is also a popular spot for weddings and other special events.
