Annapolis - USNA: Barry Gate The Commodore John Barry Gate, part of Barry Plaza, located at Prince George Street, was dedicated by the Ancient Order of Hibernians on January 6, 2012. John Barry (1745 –1803) was an Irish-born American naval officer who served at a captain in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War, and was the first commissioned American naval officer, receiving his rank of Commodore from President George Washington in 1797 and serving in the Quasi-War. He has been credited by some as "The Father of the American Navy", sharing that moniker with John Paul Jones and John Adams. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington Resigning His Commission Washington Resigning His Commission, hanging in the Grand Staircase at the Maryland State House, was painted by Edwin White in 1858. This monumental painting depicts the scene in the Old Senate Chamber on December 23, 1783, when General George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the victorious Continental Army. White took some liberties in depicting those present at the ceremony, including Martha Washington and her niece who were actually at the Washington home in Mount Vernon. The Maryland State House, located inside State Circle, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The current two-story brick building, the third statehouse on the site, was constructed from 1772 to 1797 to the Georgian style design of Joseph Horatio Anderson and features the largest wooden dome in the United States constructed without nails. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington's resignation speech In 2007, the Maryland State Archives acquired George Washington's handwritten personal copy of the speech he read from on December 23, 1783 to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The copy is currently on display in the rotunda of the Maryland State House. The draft contains Washington's edits, showing the changes he made as he wrote, none more important than his crossing out of the words "final" and "ultimate" at the close of his speech, "I retire from the great theatre of action, -- and bidding an affectionate a final farewell to this August body, I here offer today deliver my Commission, and take my ultimate leave of all the employments of public life." These edits suggest that Washington intentionally left open the possibility of a return to public life. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Frederick Douglass and The Burning of the Peggy Stewart This statue of Frederick Douglass, designed by StudioEIS, was installed in the Old House of Delegates Chamber in 2019. Frederick Douglass, born enslaved in Talbot County, Maryland, escaped to freedom and rose to become a leading abolitionist and an influential voice for human rights in 19th-century America. Douglass is depicted here at age forty-six, based on photographs from the period. The hands for the sculpture were life-cast from those of his great-great-great grandson, Ken Morris, Jr. He is shown holding a copy of the August 1862 issue of Douglass’ Monthly, which featured an article about the ‘progress of emancipation sentiment in Maryland. The Burning of the Peggy Stewart was painted by Francis Blackwell Mayer in 1896. In 1774, Annapolis witnessed its own protest against British taxation with the burning of the brigantine Peggy Stewart, enforced by locals against owner Anthony Stewart for paying the unpopular tea tax, aligning with the broader colonial resistance against British imports. This act mirrored the rebellious spirit of the Boston Tea Party and marked Maryland's stand in the escalating conflicts leading to the American Revolution. Matthew Henson, who was born in Charles County, became the first African American to reach the North Pole, on April 6, 1906, during the Arctic expedition of US Navy Commander Robert Edwin Peary. He is recognized as a co-discover of the North Pole, with Peary. This plaque it is the first state-funded memorial to an African American. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington, Lafayette & Tilghman at Yorktown Washington, Lafayette & Tilghman at Yorktown, a monumental painting hanging in the Senate Committee Room in the Maryland State House, by Charles Willson Peale was commissioned by the Maryland General Assembly and completed in 1784. It captures the historic moment following the British surrender at Yorktown. The artwork notably includes George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Lieutenant Colonel Tench Tilghman, a Marylander and aide-de-camp to Washington. Peale took particular care in portraying historical accuracy in the figures and the background setting of the surrender. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Senate Committee Room The Senate Committee Room was built as part of the original 1779 State House to serve as a meeting room for senators and a place to entertain their constituents. The room is now a gallery space featuring some of the most historically significant portraits from the state-owned art collection--a collection founded by Charles Willson Peale. The wall adjacent to the Old Senate Chamber features a wallpaper mural depicting the scene of Washington’s resignation. The mural was commissioned for the new exhibits and is based on the most recent scholarly research on 18th Century Congressional protocol for ceremonies and special events. The floor in this room is a hard pine and was installed during the 1948 renovations of the Old Senate Chamber. The mantel and fireplace in the room were installed in 1976, as part of a restoration project in honor of the Bicentennial of the United States.
