These guns were used in firing official salutes and not part of the armament of the ship. The United States Naval Academy Museum, located at Preble Hall within the Academy campus, features two floors of exhibits about the development and role of the U.S. Navy, spread across area of 12,000 square feet with four galleries. The Shady Side Rural Heritage Society (SSRHS) is a nonprofit organization located in Shady Side, Maryland. Founded in 2008, the SSRHS is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting the cultural and historical heritage of the Shady Side area. The society works to document the history of Shady Side and its surrounding communities by collecting photographs, oral histories, documents, artifacts, and other materials related to the area’s past. The SSRHS also serves as a community advocate, working to protect the area’s natural resources and promote public access to the local landscape.

The SSRHS operates a museum in the historic Shady Side Country Store, which houses a collection of photographs, documents, artifacts, and other materials that tell the story of the Shady Side area’s past. The museum is open to the public, and visitors can explore the exhibits, watch videos, and learn more about the area’s history. The society also offers educational programs and field trips for school groups, as well as lectures and workshops for adults.

Annapolis - USNA Museum: Admiral George W. Melville Sculptural bust of Rear Admiral George W. Melville (1841-1912) by sculptor Henry Jackson Ellicott. George W. Melville joined the Navy in 1861 as a third assistant engineer and climbed to rear admiral during his career as an engineer explorer and engineer. He went Polaris Expedition (1873), on the doomed Jeannette Expedition (1879-1881) and the Greely Expedition (1884). In 1887, Melville became Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering. Annapolis - USNA: Bridage Chapel Crypt John Paul Jones' remains are interred in the crypt beneath the Naval Academy Chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. The deck surrounding the crypt is inscribed the names of his ships: Bonhomme Richard, Alliance, Serapis, Ariel, Alfred, Providence, and Ranger. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter. The United States Naval Academy Chapel, or the Brigade of Midshipmen Chapel, was constructed between 1904 and 1908 in the Beaux Arts style by Ernest Flagg. The original design featured a Greek cross plan, with four equal transepts and a capacity of 1,200. In 1938, renovations under architect Paul Philippe Cret, added a nave, which changed the shape to a Latin cross, and raised seating capacity to 2,500. Annapolis: Maryland State House - State House Caucus Room The State House Caucus Room, evolving through various functions since its 18th-century origins, now facilitates legislative meetings and exhibits the USS Maryland silver service. Initially a records storage area, it became the House of Delegates' jurisdiction before showcasing Maryland's Civil War flags and then serving as a visitor center. In 2011 it was redecorated with a chracteristic deep red velvet wall fabric, overseen by architect Johnson Berman, and renamed. The Maryland State House, located inside State Circle, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. On December 23, 1783, General George Washington came before Congress to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Treaty of Paris and William Paca Proclamation The Treaty of Paris was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783 and ratified in Annapolis on January 14, 1784. Although the British Army had surrendered at Yorktown in October 1781, it took nearly two years to negotiate the terms of peace. The treaty was sent from France to Philadelphia, and taken to Annapolis by Thomas Mifflin, president of Congress. Ratification of the treaty required the presence of nine states, and confirmed international recognition of American independence. This occurred in the Old Senate Chamber on January 14, 1784, and made Annapolis the first peacetime capital of the new United States. After ratifying the Treaty of Paris, Congress directed that each state inform its people that the war was over and peace was at hand. Six days later, Governor William Paca issued a proclamation to the people of Maryland and asked that "all the good citizens of this state...observe, and carry into effect" the Treaty's requirements - to properly live as citizens of the new republic. Annapolis: Maryland State House gavel This gavel, on display in the Archives Room of the Maryland State House, is made from the Wye Oak and roots of the Liberty Tree. The decorative acorns at both ends of the gavel represent the acorn that rests atop the State House dome and signifies wisdom. The inlaid sterling silver mallet cap has the hand engraved arms and crest of the Lords Baltimore. The three large turns on the mallet head are from the Wye Oak and signify the founding of Maryland and its contribution to the formation of the Constitution.
