The Selma Dallas County Historic Preservation Society was founded in Selma, Alabama in 1989. The society's mission is to promote the preservation of Selma's historic sites and to educate the public on the importance of preserving the past. Old Depot Museum - Selma, AL <a href="https://selmamuseum.org/our-history" rel="noreferrer nofollow">selmamuseum.org/our-history</a> Highlights from their website: A tour of the Old Museum runs the gamut from the Civil War to Civil Rights. The building is a contributing property to Selma’s “Water Avenue Historic District” that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and documented in select photographs in the Historic American Buildings’ Survey. The red brick, stone trimmed building in the Romanesque Revival style was built ca. 1890. Thanks to its design, it is one of twelve railroad depots in the Southeast designated by Southern Living to be of architectural and historical importance.

Edmund Pettus Bridge Edmund Pettus Bridge (Carries US 80 over the Alabama River; 1940; steel through arch bridge; declared functionally obsolete in 2011), Selma, AL. [Site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965, when police attacked Civil Rights demonstrators with horses, billy clubs, and tear gas as they were attempting to march to the state capital, Montgomery. The marchers crossed the bridge again on March 21 and walked to the Capitol in Montgomery. Edmund Pettus, enthusiastic champion of the Confederate cause and of slavery, was a participant at the secession convention in 1861; later organized the 20th Alabama Infantry and participated in the Stones River, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Carolinas campaigns. Resumed his law practice in Selma after the Civil War and led the state Democratic Party and participated in the Ku Klux Klan, becoming the Grand Dragon in 1877. Served as US Senator from 1896 to 1909, largely on the basis of his Civil War and Klan affiliations. In 2020 Pettus's descendants recommended changing the name of the bridge.]
