Ice Shacks Also called ice huts, fishing shelters, ice houses, and more. These are on the Androscoggin River taken from the Brunswick side with Topsham in the background. Open water is visible and since I took this photo the open water has significantly enlarged and a few of these huts have been removed. We have had a much warmer winter than usual so far. An ice shanty (also called an ice shack, ice house, fishing shanty, fish house, fish coop, bobhouse, ice hut, or darkhouse) cabane à pêche (fr) is a portable shed placed on a frozen lake to provide shelter during ice fishing. They can be as small and cheap as a plastic tarpaulin draped over a simple wooden frame, or as expensive as a small cabin with heating, bunks, electricity, and cooking facilities. More durable ice houses are generally left on a lake for the duration of the ice fishing season, although this can cause problems, such as thaws and re-freezing causing houses to be immoveably frozen onto the lake. Lighter, cheaper versions can collapse into a package to be moved from lake to lake during the season. Pink Rowboat This rowboat or dinghy is in Spirit Pond in Phippsburg, Maine. It is fed by the tidal Morse River that is 1.7 miles long.
Captain's House This house is on a hill near the harbor in Cundy's Harbor, a small fishing community within the town of Harpswell. The cupola and the location indicate it to be a Captain's House. However it was built as a hotel and today is a Bed and Breakfast. See below for more information. Perched atop the most elevated bluff on the point, 250 feet from the water, this gracious 1862 landmark home affords long views over an authentic, small, working harbor and beyond to ledges, islands, river and bays. From the octagonal cupola crowning our rooftop, the panoramic vista to the Atlantic is stunning. Sparkling water showered with buoys provides a colorful confetti background for watching lobster boats, sailing vessels, seals and shorebirds. The Captain's Watch was built during the Civil War as the "Union Hotel". It later flourished as the "Cliff House" and the "Ocean View House". Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and the Harpswell Heritage Trust, the eight room original section survives as Maine's "oldest known coastal hotel structure". After its heyday, the inn became a stately private residence until its rebirth as a hospitable bed and breakfast. For the history buff, we have inherited an array of intriguing photos and 'stories' from the days when visitors arrived by schooner, steamer or stage. [captainswatchbandb.com]

Bridge Closed This past Monday we had a very strong coastal storm with rain and high winds. The result was flooding and many trees toppled over onto power lines. This is the Floyd J. Wood bridge that was constructed in the early 1930s and connects Brunswick with Topsham over the Androscoggin River and is a busy north south thoroughfare. It is in the early stages of being replaced and the cranes in the photo are part of the construction of a temporary bridge. The bridge was closed as a safety precaution and remained closed for about three days. I am not sure when that last happened. Just upriver of the bridge is a dam for electric power generation. View large to see the temporary bridge under the greed existing bridge.
Maine Sunset This was taken last night at Lookout Point in Harpswell, Maine. I was hoping for a more dramatic sky but I had to be satisfied with what you see. I blended three different exposures to try to show off this decorated Christmas tree in a boat. In the background is Henry Allen's Seafood. There were no boats in the water and it was low tide.
Holiday Glow This is sort of the opposite of the last photo being taken from the opposite shore of this pond. The large troll, Roskva, is visible between the lighted trees.
Botanical Garden Scene This photo was taken looking across a pond and a bridge that crosses it to the lights on the other side. On the left under the blue tree is a moose standing in the water.
Roskva Thomas Dambo, a Danish artist and recycle activist. He led a team of community and worldwide volunteers to help create our five trolls. Roskva is the heaviest, hardest, and strongest of the trolls. Every day, Roskva climbs towards the sky, and every year she grows taller and wider. If a troll forgets something, they can always ask Roskva—she counts the seasons and remembers everything that happens around her. Giant trolls were a rare subrace of trolls that resulted from the crossbreeding of trolls and hill giants.
