The Fort Smith Historical Society Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Fort Smith and the surrounding area in Arkansas. Founded in 1948, the Society has grown to become one of the largest historical societies in the state. Its mission is to promote education, research, and appreciation of the rich history of the Fort Smith area.
The Society has a museum which houses artifacts and documents related to the area’s past. It also maintains archives of local newspapers, photographs, and other materials. Additionally, the Society hosts educational programs and events such as lectures, seminars, and field trips.
The Society also offers genealogical resources, including a library of family histories and a cemetery records database. It maintains an online research center to assist with genealogical inquiries.
The Society is an active participant in the local community and works with other organizations to promote local history. It is also involved in many restoration projects, including the restoration of historical buildings in Fort Smith.
