The organization was established in 1998 to protect and restore the barrier islands, which serve as a natural line of defense against hurricanes and other natural disasters.

BIRDS is committed to preserving the coastal environment by implementing restoration projects that restore the natural habitats of the barrier islands. The organization works closely with government agencies, private organizations, and volunteers to carry out various restoration projects, including sand replenishment, beach stabilization, and dune restoration.
